Annecy is often nicknamed the "Venice of the Alps" due to its picturesque canals winding through the old town and its lake with dazzling blue-green waters.
Having had the chance to live in this region for nearly twenty years, I was able to appreciate day after day the unique beauty of this city that is so dear to me.
Nestled between the lake and the mountains, this Savoyard city offers a postcard-perfect setting: the reflection of colorful facades dances on the water's surface, while flower-adorned bridges invite leisurely strolls. In this Alpine gem of rare beauty, one is enchanted by the peaceful atmosphere of the quays and the distant chime of bells, echoes of a rich past. Annecy is a place where poetry blends with reality – a romantic refuge in the heart of the mountains, and for me, a place where every street and every riverside evokes countless memories.
The history of Annecy dates back to Roman times, but it was during the Middle Ages that the city truly flourished, becoming the capital of the Counts of Geneva.
From this prosperous era, the old town has preserved a remarkable heritage. Among its iconic landmarks is the
Palais de l’Isle, a medieval prison shaped like a boat, anchored in the middle of the Thiou River, and the
Château d’Annecy, a powerful fortress that once served as the residence of the counts and still proudly
overlooks the city. As you wander through the cobbled streets, you will also discover historic churches and the
Basilica of the Visitation, testaments to Annecy’s religious heritage. Every stone seems to tell a story, and
the past reveals itself at every street corner, from the whisper of the canal to the castle’s ancient ramparts.
Throughout the year, Annecy comes alive with festivals and traditional celebrations. At the end of winter, the Venetian Carnival transforms the city into a baroque theater: dozens of performers parade in sumptuous costumes and mysterious masks, reminiscent of those in Venice.
At the beginning of summer, in June, the city hosts the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, a world-renowned event that attracts professionals and animation enthusiasts from around the globe each year.
On summer evenings, the streets of Annecy shine under the magic of the Noctibules, a nighttime street art festival where circus performances, music, and illuminations enchant the city's warm nights.
And when autumn arrives, mountain traditions take center stage with the "Descente des Alpages" – locally known as the "Retour des Alpages." For one day in October, decorated herds, traditional costumes, folk music, and old crafts fill the old town, celebrating the rich heritage of Haute-Savoie.
These events, whether grand or intimate, keep a vibrant culture alive and offer visitors a glimpse into Annecy’s festive spirit.
Between Lake Annecy and the Alpine peaks, nature here is a true playground. The lake, renowned as one of the purest in Europe, offers crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and water sports—sailing, paddleboarding, or kayaking—along its lush beaches and scenic promenades.
Surrounding this turquoise expanse, a cycling path allows visitors to ride around the lake at a leisurely pace, shaded by reeds and with breathtaking mountain views. The city is embraced by mountains such as La Tournette, Semnoz, and the Aravis range, creating an exceptional natural setting that lets visitors enjoy both lake and mountain activities all year round.
In summer, hikers venture along forest trails leading to stunning panoramic views, and it is not uncommon to see colorful paragliders soaring over the lake from the Col de la Forclaz. In winter, nearby ski resorts welcome winter sports enthusiasts, all within an hour's drive.
Whether diving into crystal-clear waters, taking a boat ride, embarking on a mountain bike adventure, or skiing down snowy slopes, Annecy is a paradise for nature lovers.
Annecy and its region also delight the taste buds with generous Savoyard cuisine. The true stars of the local gastronomy are undoubtedly the cheeses: Haute-Savoie boasts several exceptional varieties (Reblochon, Tome des Bauges, Beaufort, Abondance...), often protected by AOP/IGP certifications.
Melted, gratinated, or aged to perfection, these cheeses form the foundation of many convivial and iconic dishes. A visit to the region wouldn’t be complete without tasting tartiflette, a comforting gratin of potatoes with melted Reblochon and bacon, or indulging in a creamy Savoyard fondue shared with friends around a steaming pot.

Have you heard of the Pont des Amours, that elegant wrought-iron footbridge over the Vassé Canal? According to legend, two lovers who share a kiss in the middle of the bridge will be united for life.
Though this enchanting tale may be apocryphal, it has made the Pont des Amours a must-visit spot for couples looking to immortalize their love—a romantic tradition that continues under the leafy shade of the plane trees.
Another magical moment: The Noctibules, as mentioned earlier, transform the streets into a fairy-tale setting for a few summer nights. Here, you can encounter luminous stilt-walkers, lively brass bands, or suspended acrobats, offering passersby a unique nighttime experience. These anecdotes—blending local lore with poetic festivities—illustrate the whimsical charm that reigns in Annecy.
